About the Farm:
Eco-Gardens is a small family farm in Southern KY, about an hour north of Nashville, owned by Andrew and Reuben Habegger. The brothers' farming roots run deep as they can trace their farming heritage to a homestead in Canton Bern, Switzerland, owned by a Habegger in 1540 and the last they heard still owned and operated by a Habegger. Using only horsepower to till the soil, Andrew and Reuben's family has worked the current family homestead for 38 years. The first fields were certified organic in 2006. Some years they go through the certification process and some they don't; however, they ALWAYS employ organic standards, both tried and true, and also the newest innovations in organic gardening, in other words, Beyond Organic. They believe healthy food comes from healthy soil, and eating healthy food makes healthy people. They work to boost the quality of the soil in an effort to boost the nutrient content of your food. Of course, all your veggies will be grown free of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, etc. They use organic potting soil. As per certified organic guidelines, organic seeds are used when commercially available, and untreated seeds are used whenever organic seeds are unavailable. And Eco-Gardens Farm never grows genetically modified vegetables (No GMO seeds). Andrew discusses farming methods in weekly Eco-Gardens CSA newsletters and welcomes questions from CSA members.
"We are 100% committed to growing food without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. We really depend on the natural bug-eat-bug cycles of nature and go to great efforts to preserve the ladybugs and other beneficial insects.
Our soils are fed massive, carbon rich cover crops and composts which creates a home for many happy families of earthworms and other soil life.
Our goal is to keep the lady bugs and earthworms happy, which results in, you guessed it…HAPPY VEGETABLES!"
2021 Letter From the Farm:
Exciting Greetings Friends,
I am excited to be gearing up to grow the greatest food ever in 2021. I am excited that the Strawberries look like the biggest crop ever, and the really exciting part is that we learned we can cover them with tunnels earlier and not only start picking earlier, we can pick more weeks.
Now, we’ll need to use more tunnels to make everything earlier. We hope to start three weeks earlier than we usually do, which is the second full week of April. This would possibly allow us to take a three week break in late August – early September. We plan to devote a heated tunnel to Extra-Early Tomatoes. And, after strawberries, one of the tunnels will be devoted to greens. We hope to grow Basil, Chard, and Celery (and more) all summer.
I have folks tell me they want more lettuce or more greens, but not everyone would want that. So we anticipate offering, on a Special Options Form, several different options. We plan to offer a Salad Share with lots of Lettuce and a Greens Share that would be heavy on greens. We also would try to provide a Low-Carb Share or a Nightshade-Free Share. On the Salad and Greens Shares, we hope to be able to offer a 12 week Spring and an 8 week Fall share. The cost will be about $2 more per week. Of course, the more weeks you Sign-Up for and the earlier you Sign-Up, the more cost effective it will be.
One more option we plan to offer is a Fully Personalized Double Share. If you choose this share, we will send you a list of everything we grow, and you can fill in what and how much you want per week. You’ll cross out veggies you’ll never want. And you can even write in veggies that aren’t listed, and we’ll try to grow them for you.
The cost of all shares is calculated with the assumption that you bring your container to the pick-up site and transfer the food from our container to your container. If you want to take the pre-packed shares home without transferring, we will ask you to pay for the boxes, up front. The Box Cost for 28 weeks will be $50, for 14 weeks $25.
The reasons we offer an extra discount in January are: the earlier you sign up, the better we can plan, and we do need funds to purchase supplies!
For those of you who need it, we will again offer postponed payment options. We plan for you to keep track of your own payments and make them when due, which is every 30 days. If we have to notify you, we will ask for a small fee.
Our vision is to grow healthy food that we market directly to the consumer. If you have friends that would appreciate what we offer, we would feel blessed if you would share this.
Sincerely, from your Farmers,
The Reuben and Andrew Habegger families
